MERGE Greenwich

What

MERGE Greenwich is a ground-breaking project which will simulate how autonomous vehicle ride-sharing could integrate with public transport systems.

MERGE Greenwich

Why

The advent of connected and autonomous vehicles and the development of ride-sharing services means there is now an opportunity to radically improve the way we travel around cities.

MERGE Greenwich

How

MERGE Greenwich consortium members will pool their expertise and experience to simulate a commercially viable AV ride-sharing service.

Key Benefits

With the advent of connected and autonomous vehicles and the development of ride-sharing services, there is now an opportunity to radically improve the way we travel around cities. The project aims to show how AV ride-sharing could enhance access to transport, improve choice, improve air quality and tackle congestion.

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) offer huge potential to revolutionise the way we perceive public transportation. The MERGE Greenwich project will simulate how passengers can cut travel costs by sharing vehicles with other passengers (ride-sharing) in AVs in real world situations, and help speed up the roll out of AVs onto UK roads.

Working in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, over the next 12 months, the MERGE Greenwich project will develop a commercial blueprint of how it’s possible to bring autonomous ride-sharing vehicles onto the road, and help put London at the forefront of the development of AVs.

Integrating AV ride-sharing with existing public transport could bring huge benefits to individuals, communities and the wider environment. AVs can offer greater transport access, improve road safety, boost air quality, reduce noise pollution and congestion in UK cities.
